Preventing diseases that can be detrimental to your dog's health by administering vaccines.
As you welcome a new puppy or dog to your household it's important to establish a vaccination plan. Our veterinarians can work with you to create a plan that keeps your dog protected from diseases. In the past, many of these illnesses would result in death in dogs, however with vaccines offering immunity the mortality rate has decreased.
There are two types of vaccinations for dogs: core and non-core. Core vaccines are required by law because they protect your pet from deadly diseases that often spread easily. Core vaccines for canines include Rabies, Parvovirus, Distemper, and Adenovirus. These vaccines are usually administered to puppies. Non-core vaccines are recommended if your pet has more exposure to viruses based on their activities and environment. Non-core vaccines include Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Lyme disease. To learn which vaccines your dog needs, please contact us at 705-431-5570.
Vaccination begins for puppies when they are 6 to 8-weeks-old. We administer different vaccines every 4 weeks until they reach 16-weeks-old. Your veterinarian will schedule vaccinations along with their routine wellness exams. Adult dogs will need boosters to maintain their immunity. They will need a Rabies booster every 3 years, Bordetella every 6 to 12 months and Lyme, DHPP, and Leptospirosis every year.
Although some pets may have reactions to vaccines, it is still safe. The vaccines administered to your pet have been through many trials to ensure their safety. Dogs may have some side effects like fever, loss of appetite, and fatigue but these are minor when compared to the diseases and the symptoms they would have if they were unvaccinated. It's also important to note any reaction your pet experiences will clear up within 48 hours.
